A former state employee is being accused of stealing $25,000 to feed her gambling habit.

Police are claiming that a former employee of the Treasurers office who is being accused of stealing $25000 had a $20,000 a year gambling habit. The women and her lawyer are denying these accusations.

The woman 48, from Boonville was charged in Warrick Superior Court on 14 counts of theft and another 14 counts of failure to deposit public funds.

An Indiana State police Detective heading the Investigation reported that the former treasury employee was in financial trouble, was in heavy debt was facing foreclosure on her home.

The Detective claims that the woman admitted she has a $20,000 a year gambling habit, but her lawyer says yes that she does sometimes gamble on the riverboats but that she can afford it.

An audit of the states funds found that $41,372 dollars had been stolen from the office that the woman worked at. But the charges only specified theft of $25,403.

A Warrick County treasurer started an internal audit of the funds in 2004 and then requested a 2nd audit be done by the State board of Accounts. The 2nd Audit found 37 different instances where money was allegedly stolen between December 2003 and November 2004

The audit showed that cash receipts for property taxes had been falsified.

The Detective in charge stated that the reason for their only being 14 charges instead of all 37 was because of the 37 only 14 were well documented and easy to prove.

The defense for this case says his client is not guilty.
